This painting is about being earnest. The guide to the Shipwreck Museum is perched on top of his small platform, holding the props which help him stage his stories. Even if he is a story teller, he does it without excess of artifice. His character is a simple and modest worker, with working trousers and suspenders, rolled up sleeves, and a small sailor hat. There is a lot of fondness in the way this performance is depicted, out of respect for both the character and the performer.
